Baby…somebody posted a clip of Glady Knight and the Pips on twitter and now I’m going down a Gladys Knight live performance YT rabbit hole! They didn’t call her the Empress of Soul for nothing. My auntie Janice LOVES her some Gladys Knight. Let me see if when/if I can see Ms Gladys like I saw Patti!
This is all from YT…clip on the links to see the peformances. Make sure you’ve got time to listen and sing, cause once you start, you may not be able to stop!!!
BTW, quick aside, I can’t hear this song without aging myself and thinking of the Will & Grace episode…LOL
But I digress…back to Ms Gladys…not only the slow jam R&B, but also up tempo classics like this one. Talk about a song that sung by two different artists and yet I loved both versions! Hearing a man’s perspective vs a woman’s and both versions are great!!
Another up tempo hit:
This might just be my favorite Gladys Knight and the Pips up tempo hit! The Pips footwork was classic and Gladys was the Empress of Soul.
“Darkness all around me Blockin’ out the sun Old friends call me But I just don’t feel like talkin’ to anyone… Such a sad, sad season (sad, sad season) When a good love dies (when a good love dies) Not a day goes by (not a day goes by) When I don’t realize (realize)…Ooh, ooh, oh, I’ve really got to use (I’ve got to use) My imagination (I’ve got to use) To think of good reasons (I’ve got to use) To keep on keepin’ on (I’ve got to use)”
Now the BEST live version of the song has got to be this on…where you can see the Pips footwork…IDK why that dang crowd wasn’t on their feet the entire time!
Alright now, let’s end this Gladys Knight and the Pips YT rabbit hole on back to a slow R&B classic! This classic is a great one to end this blog post on…
“If anyone should ever write my life story
(For whatever reason) for whatever reason there might be
Ooh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
‘Cause you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
Ah, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me”
Did you enjoy this trip down memory lane? Maybe the next one I do will be Gladys and the Pips hits after leading into the 80s and some of Gladys Knight’s solo and non-Pips related works.
If you like to see more, let me know!
This blog post is dedicated to my Auntie Janice…who is truly the biggest Gladys Knight fan I know! Next time I might have to give her a playlist to listen to.
