This one is short and sweet folks.
It started as what was going to be a series of tweets, but twitter isn’t really good for real conversations. So I decided to make a new blog post instead.
So I’m going beyond the whole Nate Parker aspect of the Birth of a Nation snafu…and I’ve been going back in my pop culture brain and remembering the concerted effort against Salem, 12 Years, etc.
I’m wondering though…any good movie company or PR folks will make sure that the star of their treasured project is as clean as a whistle.
But of course the studio may have just not gone that route in an effort to scoop up this film getting all this buzz and to combat the #OscarsSoBlack backlash. So they didn’t check backgrounds…
Still Hollywood has a history of under the radar (and in the case of Selma above the radar) smear campaign against film that showcase the true harshness of slavery or the true aspects of the Civil Rights era, or just any film that doesn’t involve the white man as savior.
What I’m wondering, if NOT for Nate Parker’s history…what would have been the under the radar effort to derail its awards prospects? I guess now we’ll never know because the usual suspects were given a gift in Nate Parker…
Just some thoughts…
