So here I sit. Doing what I usually do, watching tv and surfing the net. So as I’m channel surfing, what do my eyes behold…The Matrix, the original movie. So I’ve got the movie on Blu Ray already, and yet whenever it’s on tv, I often find myself settling in and stopping my channel surfing. Why, because even on television with all the damn commercials, The Matrix is STILL one damn awesome movie! And since I decided to use my blog spot more…why the hell not do a blog post about it.
So here we go, “tumbling down the rabbit hole”.
So I”m trying to remember what I thought when I first saw the Matrix. I don’t even remember when or who I saw it with, but it had to be my cousin Dede since I just about saw EVERY movie with him prior to Hurricane Katrina. The Matrix came out in 1999, so I had to have been in NOLA when I saw it for the first time.
I don’t remember exactly what I was thinking, but I do kinda remember that in the beginning, it started off with a bang (I mean who can beat the opening sequence with Trinity), but I admit, afterward, the bits with Neo and his job, I was like meh…get to some good parts. I mean it was kinda slow going there for a minute. I mean I like my sci-fi as much as the next person, but I freely admit, I up to some point until the “action” began, I was like can we get to the ass kickin’ already. Oh, but once it the action started…it really started and I.WAS.HOOKED.IN. I’ve been “hooked in” ever since. Even for the not so great 2 sequel films (we won’t even discuss those).
So, what follows are my fav scenes in the movie which I suspect are the same scenes that a lot of people love. So my top 5 scenes in no order.
1) The movie didn’t start jumping until we got Morpheus and Neo in the same room for the first time and Morpheus set the stage for the story to come…
“You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”
2) After Neo “unplug from the matrix” and finds himself in the crapfest that is the “real world” and it’s time for some training action on aboard the Nebuchadnezzar. There are any number of gifs I could find of the entire training sequence. When I say training sequence, I’m including the sequence where Morpheus introduces Neo to the Agent program, but aside from “the jump” attempt, it’s not really the money shot, naw the “money shot” from the entire training sequence is of course, Morpheus vs Neo! Gifs do not do this scene justice, this scene should never be reduced to gifs…so I’m not even gonna do it!
At this point, the movie once again slows down a bit. I liked the bits with the Oracle, but I’ll admit, on repeat showings, I just fast forward right on through that scene cause now the action really begins.
First with the Morpheus vs Agent Smith scene (I mean who can forget that sideward kick move) before Morpheus is captured. I know that a lot of folk just love the whole shoot em up sequence, but my number 3, is of course the big show piece action sequence at the office building. culminating in cinematic technological history…that back bend that made every damn body go “Whoa!” That “bullet time” sequence is STILL awesome today no matter how many times I see it. I remember how awesome it was the first time I saw it on the big screen.
4) What may just be my FAV fight sequence of the entire Matrix film, is the first fight sequence of Neo vs Agent Smith (BTW, am I the only person who LOVED the way Agent Smith sad “Miss-ter An-der’son”…lol). As much as I love the training sequence between Neo and Morpheus, the scenes in the entire trilogy where Neo is fighting Agent Smith, tend to all be my top action sequences of the entire series. I loves me some hand to hand combat and the scenes with Neo and Agent Smith are choreographed beautifully, IMHO. Kudos to whoever the fight coordinator was for the entire franchise. When the used actual stunt work instead of CGI it was awesome.
As with the sequence of Neo vs Morpheus, gifs of that subway scene never does it justice. This scene always deserves to be seen in its entirety!
5) The final long sequence in the film, where Neo is thought to be dead, but comes back to life and once again goes up against Agent Smith, isn’t the longest fight sequence ever, but it still is a fav if nothing else because the scene gave me one of my fav gifs from the film, that I still use whenever I want a gif to express me flinging off da haters like I’m just shooing a fly.
Welp. That’s it. Did I include your favorite scene? If not, what was it? Are you one of the few who’s never seen The Matrix or you saw it and never liked it (wait…wut…)? Tell me why.
